"We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world." The Buddha
Modern scientific developments in quantum physics appear to be confirming a most ancient knowledge; that we create the circumstances and features of our individual lives and the world around us by the quality of our consciousness, implying that if we only knew how, then we could knowingly create a life that is aligned to our highest and best expectations. One need only look at the world around us to see that this is needed. Stress, anger, depression and anxiety are rapidly becoming the normal experience for many. Collectively and individually we are sinking ever further into debt while we are reminded of an elite of the super-rich whose wealth is growing exponentially at the same time as the very poorest continue to multiply, both in their numbers and also the depth of their needless and harrowing suffering. News stories charting an accelerating human-created damage to the natural world have become so familiar that it now can seem almost inevitable that we are simply destroying other life forms, and ultimately ourselves, for the sake of short-term financial gain and the preservation of the status quo.
The world as we know it, established during the last great transition of the 18th century Industrial Revolution, is based on a number of core beliefs; the principal one being that each of us is a separate self-contained entity; separate from everything outside of the boundary of the physical body, separate from other human beings against whom we must protect ourselves, and separate from nature, which exists for us to use and exploit in any way that seems to help us feel good about ourselves, irrespective of the consequences. This is a narrative, paradigm, or "story in the mind" that many people subscribe to.
"The most remarkable feature of this historical moment on Earth is not that we are on the way to destroying the world; we´ve actually been on the way for quite a while. It is that we are beginning to wake up, as if from a millenia-long sleep to a whole new relationship to our world, to ourselves and each other." Joanna Macy
This is the new story, the new paradigm, that far from being a multitude of separate forms, the entire planet is a single living, conscious system; from whence we derive our sense of being. Whatever we do, say or think affects in some way every other part of the living planet. All things are connected and this awareness causes us to respond with heart & mind to issues of climate change, species extinction and social justice.
How then can we establish a new way of being in line with this truth? Look closely at yourself. You may observe a whole host of sensations, thoughts and feelings; perhaps related to past hurts & disappointments, future hopes & expectations, what you would like to do, what you ought to do, what needs to be done.. if only.. maybe.. possibly.. Look even more closely. In the midst of this endless torrent of thinking and feeling, you may notice that there is a silent watcher, aware of these things arising; alert, silent, detached, intelligent, without boundaries or spatial location.
You are that.
